The highlight of many stays – and an active contribution to the conservation programme
Following fresh tracks on foot, accompanied by biologists and Khwe San trackers, until a black rhino comes into view: few moments at Kuzikus stay with you for so long. With patience and quiet steps, you approach one of Africa’s rarest animals in its natural surroundings, without a vehicle, face to face with the wilderness.
At most lodges, visitors approach the more placid white rhinos at locations known in advance, in a full safari vehicle, before briefly getting out to observe them at close range. Kuzikus offers an exceptional alternative: tracking black rhinos on foot.
Together with us – biologists and rhino experts Berend or Friedrich Reinhard and two Khwe San trackers – you set off before sunrise in an open Land Rover, in the smallest possible group. We search for fresh rhino tracks, then follow them until we find the animal. There is always an opportunity for a short coffee break along the way.
When the wind and cover are right, we carefully approach the black rhino to identify the individual and then observe it quietly.
– the whole experience lasts around 3 to 5 hours.
This tracking experience is more than wildlife watching: it is an integral part of our conservation programme. Every sighting contributes to our monitoring and directly supports the survival of a species whose population fell by more than 98% in just 100 years. You discover the black rhino in its wider context and learn a great deal about the black rhino conservation project during this excursion with rhino experts and biologists Berend and Friedrich.
